Even though I preach Bankroll management and the succes of this project is build up around br, yesterday I decided to take a shot with 200$ at 2/4NL (even though I always insist on sitting down with maximum buyin which was 500 at the table). I quickly got up at 360 as the game was very soft (ofcourse the reason I sat down in the first place:-)). Then this hand came up:
I have a few thoughs on the hand that I might as wellshare with you now that we are at it:
- I expect us to all aggree on the rr pre even though the amount can be subject to discussion.
- On the flop I make a big mistake as I choose to check behind - I ussually always (ALWAYS) make a continuation bet after a r. I don’t really know why I didnt here:) Or maybe I do when I think of the artciles on potcontrol found to your left - either I’m way behind - 2 outs against AK or KK.
- As another heart falls on the turn I feel rather “commited” to callin as I might have the best hand and stil have the Q-high flushdraw to rely on.
- As the A falls on river and the bastard moves allin for my last 250$, mu first thought is folding. The chain of thoughts that made me call are the following:
- He raises and calls my rr with either AQ, AK or pair between 99 and KK (which he a good percentage of the time would’ve rrr’ed)
- He can’t have flush with the above mentioned hand range (The A of heart is already out there and with a pair he has one heart at most).
- So all in all the only hands that beated me was AK (less likely as the 2. A fell on river) and KK (which he 50% of the times might have rrr’ed)
Therefor the call…
I consider the projects first $500+ pot an early birthday present, as I get 25 (again) saturday - I wonder if the day will send some “drunkpoker” my way… Who knows:)
If you have any thoughts on the play, please post a comment as I’m still just a learner!
You could say that you played this hand like a millionaire might: fearlessly. You’re right that only AK is really frightening here. That check on the river was what got you the full payout in the end.
Is that good or bad?:)
Ok, call me dense, but I just found your page yesterday and found it quite interesting and have a question about this post. Not on the hand, but on your buyin max. Ok, you bought in with $200, fine. And you stated that you would normally do a max buyin of $500. However, doesn’t your chart show that you should be ONLY doing a max buyin of $400? Not nitpicking here, just honestly a little confused about your buyins and limits for BRM. I’m just trying to follow because I think what you are doing is an awesome idea (especially for me, who is trying to make it as an ametuer player).
Hi Romper, glad you found my site:) I understand your confusion! You are absolutely right about the chart stating that I should only be playing 1/2 with a max buyin of only 200 actually - the very short session at 2/4 was a small “gamble” where you would’ve seen me flying back to 1/2 and down, had I lost just a significant amount of the 200.
Hope that cleared things up a bit and ty for the question - it’s because of questions like that, I created the site in the first place.
While I am thinking about it, I wanted to ask you if you would be interested in posting a little more info about yourself. You don’t really have much info on your poker background. I.e. what books you have studied prior to the start of the project, how long you have been playing poker, waht experience to you have if any against professional players, etc. I wonder this (as others might) because we want to know if you just totally started from scratch upon starting the project or if you have had a lot of experience playing holdem prior to this. Also, do you utilize software like pokertracker, pokeroffice, poker indicator, etc.
Hi Romper,
I’ll dig in to making an about me page ASAP!
