I’m back from a Easter Holiday where the gods from above decided to grant our summer house with the craziest Easter weather ever - snow, snow and more snow! Not the weather you are looking for when being trapped in a house without an internet connection:) As you might have guessed it’s been a No Poker Holiday, and I actually think it’s very healthy to get your mind off the game sometimes and come back looking at your game with totally fresh eyes. I know I feel more motivated to brake them motherf….. at 1/2NL at Carbon Poker and take my poker carieer one step closer to being professional! I just hope I can keep up the good run I had just before the holiday.

A couple of hours later… My stomack just wouldnt let me fold even though the board was scary - what cannot see though, is that it took me all the time I had to call:

    Question for ya,

With playing low stakes NL, have you found any rules that you need to live by BECAUSE of playing such low stakes? I have started playing .25/.50 NL tables and find myself getting frustrated from such irradic play being in low stakes. Players playing pure garbage from early etc… I opened an account with pokersavvy, and like it, however, it seems like it is mostly directed to higher stakes. I’ve watched videos for $1/2 NL but the things I have learned don’t seem to be working for me. Any suggetions? Should I only be playing the best hands and thats it?

    Hi Romper,

First of all - glad to hear you’ve signed up with Pokersavvy, I have no doubt it will improve your game too.

Secondly - ty for the question, even though I’m not sure I’m in a position to try and teach others (yet:-)). I DO know how you feel for sure - been there for a very long time, so here are 6 of my humble rules on playing low limit NL Hold’em:

    1. This golden rule, I only learned 1 month ago and it alone has turned my game around: Focus on what you CAN change and not what you CAN’T - in other words - focus on playing good poker, not the result - you can’t change how the cards fall.

    2. Don’t let the bad play at these low stakes jinx your mind into thinking its good poker to limp with 47 in early position.

    3. I promise you that you simply by following this next rule will become a winning player until at least 0.5/1NL: Fold or raise preflop - If you are first in and the hand is not good enough for a raise, let it go, it will save you a LOT of money. In other words, play tight/aggressive!

    4. Get in position - the players at our low stakes don’t stand a chance of you only play them in position, so let that small blind go and earn you money on the button instead!

    5. Continuation bet - have you raised preflop, make a continuation bet on the flop if theres 2 or less opponents in the hand.

    6. Valuebet - it’s at the river that the pot is the largest so this is also where people call the largest bets - so remember to ALWAYS valuebet when you think your hand is best - you will be in front by far enough times to increase your winnings drasticly!

Do let me know if it was any help, we might have a post there…

Thanks for the insite. I have already been doing most of these things. How do you respond when you have raised Preflop with a big and AKs of AQs but miss the flop. Then bet out with a C-bet and get a caller. Should I shut it down or make another bet post turn? I seem to be losing money in these situations since SO MANY wally’s just call often.

In general I would always C-bet against just one opponent (I don’t hope to many of my opponents from Carbon Poker read this:-), but if the guy is 100% pure donk, theres no reason ofcourse - instead valuebet the spots where you actually made a hand - he will call often enough with second best hand to make a profit anyway.

One last thing is that I used to lose a lot of money the exact same way - when betting into a calling station. I found out that it was especially when I was out of position, so once again - cut down on the early position play and get position on the donks!

Let me know how it works out for you…

In Lieu of your advice and help to me I would like to return the favor. I found an interesting article at Railbirds.com, that I thought my be beneficial to yourself and anyone who reads this page. Under “Tips from the pros”, I found article #75 called: Check-Raising on Draws. Tonight I took the idea for a test run and in the hour that I played it made me about $30. Remember, I play small stakes! Give it a try if you don’t already.

And yes, your advice has helped, by the way! Particularly rule #1. I am now not getting frustrated with the game as long as I know that I have made the right play and the money DOES follow. Doing better now, THANKS!
